Oakland council member's car broken into for second time in two weeks, police say

OAKLAND — A rock was thrown through the windshield of a 2001 Jaguar belonging to Councilmember Desley Brooks (Eastmont-Seminary) outside her home this morning in what police believe was a failed attempt to burglarize the vehicle for the second time in two weeks.

The rock not only left a large hole in the windshield but also damaged the seat and inner passenger side door, police said.

Police said they believe the same person, or people, who broke into the car Nov. 1 came back again but fled before anything was taken.

On the morning of Nov. 1, Brooks discovered someone had gotten into the car and taken $50 and a CD player. The thieves also were able to open the hood and steal the car's air filter system, which is worth about $500. There was no sign of a forced entry into the car.

Officer Ed Somarriba said police believe the thieves today were seeking the new air filter system but for some reason left before stealing anything, possibly because something scared them off. Brooks told police she does not think she is being victimized because she is a council member.
