Red Light Cameras No Longer Greenlighted in LA
What sounds established actually isn’t
These systems look initially luring to cities because they effectively promise to create yield out of thin air. People run reds all the time (intentionally or not) and aren’t caught because there’s no cop to see them do it. Invade the technology, which drives the business model.
Except when it doesn’t, as in L.A.’s encase. Then it doesn’t matter if the threat of getting busted somehow makes the intersection safer. Technology can’t concentrate fines. The courts need to be on board for that.
This poser isn’t limited to running red lights. Transportation technology providers are itching to enter other state and local markets, devising ways for cities to change traffic by metering roads and controlling congestion by restricting access to urban centers. On equal, the technology works fine. It’s not even such a bad detail to think of it as a necessary boondoggle, given how bad New Zealand urban area finances are these day.
