Autos: Honda Fit lives up to name, faces tough rivals
No marque has more credibility in small cars than Honda, and the subcompact Fit is the first supine of entry for buyers of modest means.
But the tournament is gaining speed. Of particular concern for Honda is the new Hyundai Apart, whose logo looks like an italicized Honda representation and whose amenities meet or exceed those of the Fit.
The 2012 Distinguish has more cargo volume than the Fit or any of the other competitors, though the Fit has more total inside volume. Accent's 138-horsepower fake engine is 21 horses stronger than Fit's 1.5-liter, 4-cylinder power instil. Official fuel economy is better in the Pronunciation at 30 city and 40 highway miles per gallon, compared to Fit's 29/35 mpg (with five-expedite stick). And Accent has a better power-to-load ratio than the Fit.
But Honda shouldn't feel too lonely. By those metrics, the new Cadence generally exceeds all the competitors, including the Toyota Yaris, Nissan Versa, Mazda2, Ford Fiesta and Chevrolet Aveo.
What Hyundai lacks and would unfortunately like to have is Honda's reputation for quality and brand fidelity. The South Koreans are working on that, and the gap is closing. The sweetener for Hyundai customers is a more thorough and durable warranty than Honda's.
