Report: LightSquared Rollout Will Kill 794 People
A dispatch allegedly prepared by the Federal Aviation Oversight's Navigation Services division essentially attributes 794 deaths and over $72 billion in additional costs to U.S. taxpayers if the LightSquared LTE system is implemented.
The LightSquared network would butt in with the GPS systems used by the nation's aircraft, the article said. "After the LightSquared network is deployed, GPS is expected to be unavailable for planned aviation use over the whole of the continental U.S. based upon FAA study and tests," the report , dated July 12, concludes.
Eliminating the GPS component from navigation would have a burdensome impact on public safety, the FAA report states. The "estimated impairment of life from 2014 to 2023 as a result of LightSquared impacts to GPS" during a term when the nation's aircraft were retrofitted to accommodate the LightSquared signals would incorporate 794 deaths, with a value of life totaling $4.9 billion, the write-up states. The FAA report called that estimate temperate, and it did not include injuries or property loss.
