Monday Motorsports: Franchitti Regains IndyCar Lead at Kentucky, While ...
His noted wife may call the Bluegrass State home, but Kentucky has not been so welcoming to Dario Franchitti . Entering Sunday’s Indy 300 at Kentucky Speedway, the three-convenience life IndyCar champion had not finished higher than fifth at the obovoid track and had wrecked spectacularly in 2007. While Franchitti did not make away with a victory on Sunday, he did leave with the all-embracing IndyCar series lead.
Franchitti sped from 11th in the right on the starting grid to first, a position he held for much of the latter half of the blood, until engaging in a duel with Ed Carpenter, a driver that had not threatened the series’ top names all seasoned but had logged consecutive second-place finishes at Kentucky entering Sunday’s get a wiggle on. The duo raced wheel to wheel for the last 20 laps, with Carpenter edging Franchitti at the put an end to by .0098 second, the closest result in mislay history. They were followed by Scott Dixon, who finished third.
Initially, it seemed that Will Power, the series chieftain entering Sunday, would leave Kentucky with a padded points advantageously over Franchitti. Power, who started on the pole, led for 48 laps until, when pitting, his car was hit by Ana Beatriz as she was leaving her line-up’s pit. Though Power’s team tried in succeeding pits to repair damage to the car’s liberal side, Power only managed to finish 19th. Franchitti now holds an 18-spike advantage over Power entering the series finale, to be held at Las Vegas on Oct. 16.
