CONFIGURATION
The Q7 was the third five-door ute spun off from the VW Touareg/Porsche Cayenne stand, though it alone received the extended-wheelbase (longer by 14 cm) style — enough stretch for a third-row bench. Production began in autumn of 2005 in Bratislava, Slovakia, though it wouldn’t launch in North America until a year later as a 2007 facsimile.
Like its brethren, the Q7 had independent-suspension button arms all around and an optional air suspension system, which allowed it to promote itself to boost ground clearance when the terrain required it, and kneel down to inch entry and egress.
Par for the brand, the Q7’s shack was a stylish affair with a control layout that was everyday to anyone who spent time in an A6 or A8 sedan — but in a loftier space position. The interior was an elegant environment of down in the mouth colours, rich materials and superb space.
Second row head- and legroom were good, but the free third-row bench was suitable only for kids, and getting to it required the conformability of a Peking contortionist. Cargo capacity was a headlining 72 cubic feet with all the rear seats folded, but with seven passengers there was a stingy 12 cubes left for gear.
